Butyric anion is readily absorbed by enteric cells and utilized as a chief source of energy. Additionally, butyric acid is also a significant form of colonocyte proliferation and apoptosis, gastrointestinal tract motility and bacterial microflora composition along with its participation in a number of different processes such as immunoregulation and anti inflammatory action. The pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the most frequently diagnosed gastrointestinal ailment, is complicated, and its exact mechanisms are still unsure.
